Social Hockey

Our social hockey, also known as ‘Back 2 Hockey’ is aimed at players who have been away from the sport and want a gentle re-introduction or those who prefer a less serious/more fun approach to the sport. We do not play any competitive matches but some have moved to playing in our Women's and Men's sides.

Social Hockey sessions occur every Thursday evening between 8pm to 9pm, after which several people finish the evening in a local pub.

All Adults are welcome, its a mixed hockey session for all levels.

The cost is “pay as you play” and is £7.50 per session. Plus an annual social membership fee of £25 per year (payable September for non-club members). Sessions are required to be booked and paid for via our club app Teamo.

Timings: 8.00pm to 9.00pm on Thursday evenings at St. Augustine’s (click here for directions). Arrive at 7.45pm to prepare for the session.

Please note: St. Augustine’s has a secure gate requiring a code for access. If you do not know the code, please get in touch with us for details. Players must register in advance due to a cap on the maximum number of participants for enjoyment purposes.

“If you want competitive hockey, go to training. This is social hockey, so:

1. Hard slap hits and hard hits are a foul, even if into open space. Instead, do pushes.
2. Pockets of competition are a foul. Watching good players slug it out with each other doesn’t inspire. It intimidates and demoralises. I’ll decide to whom to award the foul. 
3. Sprinting past opponents with the ball isn’t social. Sprinting into open space to receive the ball is.
4. If guidelines are being ignored, let me know so I can intervene. It’s better that ten people feel tonight’s too tame than one person feels it’s too competitive. 
5. Finally, enjoy it. It’s a chance to try new positions and skills. Maybe make up rules just for your team, e.g. “three touches”, or “a designated scorer” or whatever.
