About Us

Welcome to our club

We are Ealing’s very own local field hockey club at the heart of the leafy West London Borough. We welcome hockey enthusiasts of all abilities and have teams in all junior and senior age groups.

Relaunched in 2013, Ealing Hockey Club has a legacy of hockey excellence in West London dating back to the 1880s. “We are not just a hockey club, we are part of the local community in so many ways”.

We cater to our extended hockey family with a weekly social hockey programme that enables adult players to get back into the sport or just continue to play the sport in a relaxed and fun environment.

Ealing’s junior hockey club has had impressive growth (350) from its inception and is very much a reflection of the diversity of the community it serves. We wish to enable any junior to play at their highest level. All our junior teams compete in the Home Counties, with a number of teams in the Tier 2 England Cup, National Age Group, and National Indoor competitions. We cater for all standards and make them feel welcome.

The club is very proud that it attracts juniors from all backgrounds and schools, helping with bursaries and kit to support those families on Universal or Housing Benefits.

Ealing HC is an England Hockey ClubMark accredited sports club.

Club History

In October 1884, Mr Edward H Nash, through the columns of the Middlesex Times, called for other gentlemen to join him in forming a club in Ealing, for the purpose of ‘playing the excellent game of hockey’. This was the birth of Ealing Hockey Club. In 1885/86, this men’s team was involved in forming the Hockey Association and by the 1888/89 season, they had a second XI team. In 1911/1912 the team merged with Mid Surrey renaming themselves the Mid Surrey & Ealing Hockey Club. Sadly following the First World War, the club was renamed again and ‘Ealing’ was dropped from its title.

Ealing Ladies were also one of the first women’s hockey teams in the country. Although exact dates of when the team was formed are not clear, we can be certain that a ladies team was thriving in Ealing by 1888 (possibly earlier) and that the ladies joined the All England Womens Hockey Association in 1897. Ealing Ladies Hockey Club would go on to produce many county and national players over the next 100 years and also won numerous National Finals both in outdoor and indoor leagues.

The current club was set up by Total Hockey in 2013, shortly after the London Olympic Games, under the direction of England Hockey. Our focus is very much on the development of juniors, and being an inclusive club we welcome young people of all ages and abilities. Since its revival in 2013 the club has thrived and provides a much-needed service in West London. In 2016, some 128 years after our auspicious predecessors, an Ealing Ladies Hockey team was formed and started to compete in a League Competition. We look forward to bringing the fantastic game of hockey to the next generation of young players and to serving our community for many years to come.

Our founders, Total Hockey, were an Official Coaching Agency of England Hockey and provided coaches for a number of schools and clubs including Ealing, Richmond and Greenwich. Total Hockey donated Ealing HC to the members under the HMRC CASC status providing a light touch charitable status. They remain connected to the success of Ealing Hockey and were awarded The Club’s inaugural Vice Presidents.

Ealing Coaches

Ealing Hockey is fortunate to list 3 Level 1, 7 Level 2 and 2 Level 3 England Hockey Qualified Coaches.

Some Ealing coaches were part of TotalHockey, formerly an Official Coaching Agency of England Hockey.

Since 2021 Ealing Hockey, under the direction of Dain Lewis, remodeled its coaching to enable the most focused to excel further. The Club introduced video coaching for feedback, record matches, and player development at its Talent Centre.

Dain, a former National Performace coach for England brings a wealth of knowledge from his years coaching for England Hockey and in the Netherlands.

Our Men's Head Coach is Anthony Jones, an EH Level 3 qualified coach and a former Welsh and Commonwealth International. Alex Curtis, our first Young Leader, returned to us in September 2024 following his graduation and retirement from playing for the USA to lead our men's section. He is an integral part of our Talent Centre coaching team.

Ealing HC is proud to be part of the National Talent Centre Cohort (3) accredited by England Hockey for our ability to develop high-quality players.

If you wish to speak with any coaching staff, please use the Contact Page on the Ealing website.

Talent Centre

Ealing HC is proud to be part of the England Hockey Talent Centre (Cohort3)

England Hockey's Talent Centres provide young players with high-quality coaching, access to better facilities, and opportunities to develop their skills in a structured environment. These centres also help identify and nurture potential future stars, promoting a clear pathway for progression in the sport.

We see an important role that we need to be part of and that is spotting potential and helping that flourish into talent.

At Ealing's Talent Centre (TC), we are committed to providing a comprehensive, high-performance environment that supports the holistic development of every young hockey player. Our TC is designed to help athletes reach their full potential, focusing on the game's technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects. Below expands on what we offer:

5. Education and Life Skills

"Right Athlete, Right Environment" (RARE)

The Ealing HC guide to maintaining an athlete-centric culture that fosters development, inclusivity, and peak performance.

Our Team Managers, Captains and Coaches, are key to maintaining our unique framework across the whole club:

1. Tailored Athlete Development Pathway

Junior to Senior: Offer a seamless progression for players from youth to senior levels, so each athlete knows the next steps and can see the opportunities to advance. Our Senior section is very much a player pathway for our older junior section.

Individualised Training: Recognise each athlete’s unique needs by providing access to specialized coaching, injury prevention, and mental resilience training tailored to their position, experience, and development goals.

Multi-Disciplinary Support: Bring together fitness coaches, nutritionists, mental health professionals, and skill coaches to support every athlete, focusing on holistic development and well-being.

2. Culture of Inclusivity and Belonging

Core Values: Embed core club values of respect, teamwork, discipline, and resilience into every aspect of the club. Celebrate diversity by honouring the backgrounds, abilities, and stories of each player.

Open Communication: Create regular feedback loops with athletes to ensure they feel heard and can share ideas, concerns, or barriers they face.

Leadership Development: Encourage athletes at all levels to take on leadership roles, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility for the club’s culture.

3. Optimal Training and Competition Environment

Consistent, Quality Facilities: With a long-term partnership with St. Augustine’s Priory School and St. Benedict's School the Club has access to quality training facilities, maintained pitches, and safe, weather-appropriate equipment to make training productive and enjoyable.

Safe Environment: Prioritise athlete safety by establishing guidelines for injuries, heat, hydration, and rest. All coaches and volunteers maintain their certification in athlete safeguarding.

Balanced Competition Exposure: Schedule competition to be challenging yet appropriate for each level, promoting development without burnout.

4. Community and Identity Building

Club Events and Traditions: Beyond "Club Day", League and Cup Fixtures TMs organise regular events, such as, visits to international events (FIH Pro League), off-season-friendly tournaments, family gatherings, and community-led projects, to strengthen bonds among athletes, coaches, families, and supporters.

Club Representation: Encourage all members to represent the club with pride by wearing club colours, celebrating achievements, and engaging in local events to create a lasting positive image.

5. Accessible Pathways for Everyone

Financial Support: The Club offer scholarships, subsidies, or flexible payment plans so that financial barriers don’t limit access.

Skill-Based Grouping: Create flexible grouping based on skill levels rather than just age or seniority to allow for optimised learning and competition.

Implementation:

This "Right Athlete, Right Environment" approach has been incorporated into our Club policies, coach training, and regular athlete evaluation sessions.   Our Team Managers and Coaches are committed to the development, inclusivity, and community club-wide, ensuring every athlete thrives.

This framework builds a culture that focuses not just on performance, but on a cohesive, supportive, and sustainable approach to hockey at all levels.
