It was a nostalgic day for the stand in captain who grew up & went to the primary school down the road from Southbury Leisure Centre Hockey pitches in Enfield.
A prematch chat revealed that the opposing team had ambitions to win the league & had been dominating their previous matches so far.
The EHC Men’s 2s team had never played on a slow, sandy pitch before & took a good part of the first 20 minutes getting used to the pace of the match & defending hard against a very well drilled & skilful team.
However, EHC M2 kept their defensive structure & worked hard marking & pressing the opponents for long stretches of the match & kept the score down to 0-1 at half time.
The GK Joshua was immense not only making several vital saves & interceptions but also marshalling the defence effectively. Taranveer took a hard rap on his shins at a short corner but prevented a goal.
Even after going 0-2 down our team kept running hard. This hard work culminated in a blistering goal by Zeya, who dribbled past several players from the right & hit a low hard shot into the far corner. It was a well deserved goal for the team.
Match teas were in a cute, creaky old clubhouse in Winchmore Hill. Ben & Jem enjoyed a chilli con carne & rice in the sun whilst relaxing on the clubhouse veranda watching a local football match.
So we all left in good spirits with plenty of good hockey to reminisce on over the weekend. Well done EHC M2.
